The world had just emerged from World War II although this does not provoke a hopeful response in the author, he does explain why Brave New World made no mention of atomic energy-the explosive force whose power was demonstrated in Hiroshima in the final days of the war. Huxley died in California on 22 November 1963.In 1946, fourteen years alter the publication of Brave New World, Huxley was invited to write a new foreword to the novel. His beliefs found expression in both fiction (Time Must Have a Stop,1944, and Island, 1962) and non-fiction (The Perennial Philosophy, 1945 Grey Eminence, 1941 and the account of his first mescalin experience, The Doors of Perception, 1954. The exploration of the inner life through mysticism and hallucinogenic drugs was to dominate his work for the rest of his life. As the West braced itself for war, Huxley came increasingly to believe that the key to solving the world's problems lay in changing the individual through mystical enlightenment. In 1937, at the height of his fame, Huxley left Europe to live in California, working for a time as a screenwriter in Hollywood. The great novels of ideas, including his most famous work Brave New World (published in 1932 this warned against the dehumanising aspects of scientific and material 'progress') and the pacifist novel Eyeless in Gaza (1936) were accompanied by a series of wise and brilliant essays, collected in volume form under titles such as Music at Night (1931) and Ends and Means (1937). For most of the 1920s Huxley lived in Italy and an account of his experiences there can be found in Along the Road (1925). This was swiftly followed by Antic Hay (1923), Those Barren Leaves (1925) and Point Counter Point (1928) - bright, brilliant satires in which Huxley wittily but ruthlessly passed judgement on the shortcomings of contemporary society. He began writing poetry and short stories in his early 20s, but it was his first novel, Crome Yellow (1921), which established his literary reputation. Whether he was testing a new application of an aircraft for the military, wringing out a new design as part of his government obligations to certify the type or doing a periodic recertification flight in a restored pre-WW II British kite, Taylor is not afraid to point out foibles and mistakes of his own as well as of those of the people who designed and maintained the machines. Taylor’s book is a collection of stories told in no specific order, but circling back on one another when required to build a narrative of experience and to connect the dots on aircraft that he sampled as they matured over the years. The saying “I’d rather be good than lucky, but I’ll take luck when I can get it!” is certainly appropriate when you’re an itinerant test pilot. Sometimes, luck has been involved, as is the case for most anyone who has dabbled in the far corners of the flight envelope. However, he’ll be the last one to let his ego take charge and tell you that his survival was all about superior skill. Make no bones about it, Taylor has had to be very good to have survived the adventures he relates. The most remarkable thing is that Taylor tells his story with a self-deprecating style so typical of accomplished British explorers and adventurers. He has flown (and tested) helicopters, autogiros and fixed-wing aircraft as he honed his craft and became the “go to” guy in Britain-and around the world-for doing initial flight testing as well as recurrent recertification testing of flying machines old and new. The back of his book lists all the types flown and it reads like a “what’s what” in aviation history. The second is that it is going to be hard to put down until you’ve finished!Ĭhris Taylor is a British test pilot with years of experience in the military, government and now private sectors of aviation. When a book starts out as entertaining as this, you know two things-the first is that it was written by a Brit. As I slid sidewards with the metal skids kicking up an almighty cascade of sparks from the tarmac runway you might conclude that I was mad, bad or stupid for me this was just another typical working day in my life as a test pilot. I was testing the emergency landing characteristics of a Polish helicopter in Arizona, USA on a very warm day at an airfield that was a mile above sea level. I could do nothing but ‘Keep calm and hang on’ … I couldn’t steer and sparks were flying everywhere … Patient under guardianship or curatorshipĪmraoui J, Pouliquen C, Fraisse J, Dubourdieu J, Rey Dit Guzer S, Leclerc G, de Forges H, Jarlier M, Gutowski M, Bleuse JP, Janiszewski C, Diaz J, Cuvillon P. The two techniques (the Fixed Rate Guided Breathing Technique = cardiac coherence and hypnosis) can potentiate each other and become synergistic. The aim of this study is to propose an alternative to pharmacological premedication by a non-drug approach. If for some patients, this anxiety is more or less manageable, for others, it is the major concern with regard to their intervention.įor many years, pharmacological premedication, especially with benzodiazepines, has been the gold standard for the treatment of preoperative anxiety, but this systematic prescription is increasingly controversial, especially in populations most exposed to side effects, such as elderly subjects and patients with cardiac or respiratory pathologies. In oncology, 60 to 80% of patients suffer from stress throughout their treatment. The perioperative period is recognized as anxiety-provoking for most patients. Pour one glass of vinegar into the bucket and fill more than half of it with warm water. Try not to rub the stain to avoid smearing it larger. Then, using a clean sponge, pick up a small amount of rubbing alcohol and lightly blot the stain, so it fades gradually. Like the previous method, you will need to start by arranging a towel beneath your stained clothing. Step 1: Prep the clothing item and blot the stain Method 2: With Rubbing Alcohol and Vinegar Launder it as you normally would and avail of a brand new garment when the wash is finished! Then, sponge your piece of clothing to get rid of any soap that is left.įinally, throw your stain-free clothing into the washing machine. Rinse the sponge or grab a new one and wet it. Now, work the rest of the stain out with a sponge doused in water and mild dishwasher soap. After about a minute, use a toothbrush to scour the stain. Do this until suds start to form and the stain fades.Īlternatively, you can pour the soap directly on the stain and let it settle. Next, grab an unused toothbrush wet with water and dunk it in Muphy’s oil soap. To begin, place an old, thick towel under the stained fabric on the table. Step 1: Prep the clothing item and toothbrush Plus, if you want to get dry erase marker out of fabric without rubbing alcohol, this is the best option. You might be skeptical initially, but we are not the only ones claiming this. You will quickly begin to see less marker residue left behind on your dry erase board. The dry erase marker comes out of clothes easily with Murphy’s oil soap. Kiss Ghosting Goodbye After using the above method, your haunting ghosting issue should disappear. Once this happens, it is important to undergo the full cleaning process outlined above, as well as clean or replace your eraser when it becomes dirty or damp. Spray cleaners will also create a film which will be spread around by a dirty and sometimes damp eraser. Eventually, this residue will build a film that will make the markers erase with more difficulty. Even a cleanly erased marker will leave some residue on the board. We recommend Expo brand dry erase markers. Please note that markers manufactured by different companies will erase differently. Clean your boards frequently Markers left on the board for longer periods of time may erase with more difficulty, so make sure to erase and clean your boards often. At this point you should not feel any drag on the cloth from any remaining cleaner or other residues.ĥ. Dry your board Once the dry erase board has been rinsed, dry the board with a soft, dry cloth. Add clean water After you've applied your liquid cleanser to the board, rinse using clean water and a soft clean cloth.Ĥ. Dial "Soft Scrub" is a great example of an appropriate liquid cleanser.ģ. It is important to make sure this cleanser does not contain bleach. Choose your cleaner wisely There are many options for cleaning your dry erase board. Ghosting issues with new boards often occur due to this film.Ģ. Be sure to remove this film from your whiteboard when it arrives. When the plastic is removed an adhesive film may exist. Remove any protective film Many times whiteboards will have a protective plastic sheet applied at the factory. Please refer to the manufactures instructions for those products.ġ. Melamine, High Pressure Laminate, vinyl and plastic coated writing surfaces will develop fine scratches over time and become difficult to clean. Please note: This cleaning method is meant for porcelain enamel boards which have a vitreous (fired glass) writing surface. Just follow these instructions for a brighter, cleaner whiteboard. One way to begin answering them came to Mark Stoneking in 1999, when he received a notice from his son’s school warning of a potential lice outbreak in the classroom. Why and how did humankind become “unusually successful”? And what, to an evolutionary biologist, does “success” mean, if self-destruction is part of the definition? Does that self-destruction include the rest of the biosphere? What are human beings in the grand scheme of things anyway, and where are we headed? What is human nature, if there is such a thing, and how did we acquire it? What does that nature portend for our interactions with the environment? With 7 billion of us crowding the planet, it’s hard to imagine more vital questions. Seeing my face brighten, she added: Of course, the fate of every successful species is to wipe itself out. For one thing, she said, we’re unusually successful. But as I recall it, she answered that Homo sapiens actually might be interesting-for a mammal, anyway. This was just chitchat on the street, so I didn’t write anything down. Compared to this power and diversity, Margulis liked to tell me, pandas and polar bears were biological epiphenomena-interesting and fun, perhaps, but not actually significant.ĭoes that apply to human beings, too? I once asked her, feeling like someone whining to Copernicus about why he couldn’t move the earth a little closer to the center of the universe. Microorganisms have changed the face of the earth, crumbling stone and even giving rise to the oxygen we breathe. Heck, the number of bacterial cells in our body is ten times more than the number of human cells!īacteria and protists can do things undreamed of by clumsy mammals like us: form giant supercolonies, reproduce either asexually or by swapping genes with others, routinely incorporate DNA from entirely unrelated species, merge into symbiotic beings-the list is as endless as it is amazing. More than 90 percent of the living matter on earth consists of microorganisms and viruses, she liked to point out. Still, she couldn’t help regarding conservationists’ preoccupation with the fate of birds, mammals, and plants as evidence of their ignorance about the greatest source of evolutionary creativity: the microworld of bacteria, fungi, and protists. Margulis was no apologist for unthinking destruction. Hey, Charles, she would call out, are you still all worked up about protecting endangered species? She knew I was interested in ecology, and she liked to needle me. Until Margulis’s death last year, she lived in my town, and I would bump into her on the street from time to time. A researcher who specialized in cells and microorganisms, Margulis was one of the most important biologists in the last half century-she literally helped to reorder the tree of life, convincing her colleagues that it did not consist of two kingdoms (plants and animals), but five or even six (plants, animals, fungi, protists, and two types of bacteria). THE PROBLEM WITH environmentalists, Lynn Margulis used to say, is that they think conservation has something to do with biological reality. (This essay was a finalist for a 2013 National Magazine Award in the Essay category.) In addition to that, you may only want to capture UDP DNS traffic and not TCP, you can specify the protocol You can also negate the capture as we did above under Exclusion by using: If you only want to capture DNS packets as an example, you can use the following filters You can also be deliberate with the direction of the traffic, for instance, I may only want to see the traffic that is sourced from 10.1.30.0/24 or source IP of 10.1.30.1 in this example: Net 10.1.1.0/24 #This will only capture traffic to and from the 10.1.1.0/24 subnet. Host 10.1.1.60 # This will only capture traffic to and from this host You only want to focus on a range of IP addresses The use case for this filter is you do not want to capture packets from the local machine connect to Dropbox, iCloud Drive, etc. In this example, we only want to capture traffic to / or from a particular range of addresses. Ip Inclusion Including hosts and networks If for example, you do not want to capture other possibly non important packets such as broadcast, multicast and spanning tree, you can use the simple but affective filter of If you do not want to see broadcast as an example, you could use Port not 22 # This one will not capture any of your standard SSH port traffic.ĭst host not 10.1.1.60 #This will capture everything EXCEPT traffic to 10.1.1.60 Lets say your IP address is 10.1.1.50 and the destination is 10.1.1.60 in this example: Have you ever started a capture on a device you are SSH’d to and then find that you are sifting through your own connection packets? Here is a filter to use when you want to exclude your connection. It sounds obvious but I will cover it here.Ĭapture Filter – With these filters, only the packets that match the filter will be captured and saved to a pcap or to the buffer.ĭisplay Filter – With the display filter, you can filter out what you are looking at from the throng of data you captured with or without the capture filter. Unfortunately, they are not interchangeable, however they are not difficult and there are many “cheat sheets” out there that can help you, especially if you are not using them on a daily basis. There are two types of filters in Wireshark capture filters and display filters. It is not an exhaustive list but rather some of my “go to’s” In this article I will go through some of the basic filters I use regularly in Wireshark. Wireshark has a multitude of sample captures if you want to step up your packet capture foo. Either way, I win because the problem is solved which is all I really want. They fix the problem and tell me they did nothing. Usually I send them a PCAP with the pertinent info, a doc explaining my theory and two things happen 1. Most of the times, I use it as a tool to show how it is NOT my fault, rather the other side’s. Sniffer apps such as Sniffer Pro, TCPDump, and Wireshark have been paramount for my success in the field. I have a motto I have lived by in my network years, “When in doubt, sniff it out”. OK maybe not but it does show a level of knowledge on the end user if they in fact have Wireshark. When I am working with someone on a GTM or a Zoom type solution and I ask, “Do you have Wireshark installed on your computer”, if they tell me no, I am immediately suspect. "i rlly waited all day just for james charles to upload a video saying he’s putting out the same damn palette as the first, but smaller." Both types are made by forcing water through compact coffee beans, so the Lungo is slightly stronger. While it isn’t much smaller than the most popular type of espresso, it is stronger than a Lungo, which is usually used as a light breakfast drink. While it is a good coffee choice for those who enjoy strong caffeine, many people prefer the flavor and aroma of a Lungo instead.Ī classic espresso shot is a most commonly consumed espresso in the world. This is because the flavor of a Lungo is different from an espresso shot. It also lacks the intense flavor and crema of traditional espresso. Despite its lower caffeine content, the Lungo has a richer taste. You can even make a lungo with a single shot of espresso.ĭespite being stronger than a regular espresso, Lungo is not as concentrated as an espresso shot. In addition, they can take more than a minute to brew. A shot has a higher concentration of caffeine per ml than a lungo, which is about the same amount of water. While both coffees contain caffeine, they are slightly different in strength. If you are confused about the difference between an espresso and a lungo, don’t worry. The higher temperature of the water will ensure they blend well. They have a fuller body and a creamy texture. They contain 150 mg of caffeine per shot, and the flavor is rich and complex. This is because Lungo and Gran Lungo have higher proportions of robusta beans. Gran Lungo is available in three serving sizes.ĭepending on your preference, Lungo or Gran Lungo may be more intense than the originals. Lungo and Gran Lungo are popular single espressos, and the Espresso pod gives you approximately 1.35 ounces of caffeine. If you’re looking for a more intense coffee, you’ll find a variety pack of espresso and iced coffee pods for the Lungo. A darker roast will give you a richer, bolder taste, and more pronounced flavor. Those who want to experience the full range of coffee should try this blend. It does not have an overly bitter aftertaste, but there is a hint of bitterness. While the brewing process is similar, the flavor is different. The differences between the two espressos are based on taste and quantity. A typical lungo shot contains about three parts water and one part espresso. Both espressos and lungs have different amounts of caffeine. Gran Lungo contains double the amount of water. Gran Lungo contains less caffeine and is generally less bitter. Lungo and espresso have very similar flavors, but there are some differences. If you are unfamiliar with the procedure, watch the video below. You can also adjust the water levels factory-set by following the instructions in the user manual. It is possible to program the espresso button to pull a shot of espresso with less water than the lungo button. You can customize the pre-programmed brew sizes with the help of the user manual. Because it requires double the amount of water, it is not recommended for everyone, but if you like the taste of a stronger espresso, the Gran Lungo is a great choice. Because it uses double the water in Nespresso Lungo Gran Lungo, it requires twice as much water as an espresso, so it takes twice as long to brew. The Lungo shot is slightly less powerful than an espresso. However, the downside of the Gran Lungo is that it lacks the aromas and flavors of a standard espresso. This makes the Lungo a better choice for those looking to increase their caffeine intake. The more water, the more caffeine is extracted, and the flavor is more complex. While the amount of water in the Nespresso Lungo Gran Longo is nearly double that of the standard espresso, the difference is noticeable. |
